How to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

How to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter

Winter is Coming — Is Your Roof Ready?

Winter is almost here! It’s also that time of year when you should button up your home as well as your jacket. Between now and the first freeze of winter, there are several things you should do to prepare your roof for the winter. Don’t wait until your roof starts leaking, call the professionals at Tugwell Roofing to get a free, honest roofing inspection to see what kind of shape your roof is in. Before winter gets in the full swing of things, it’s important to make sure your roof is ready to handle the extremes common to our winter climate in Northern California.

One of the most important steps in getting your home ready for winter is to make sure your roof is ready for heavy rains, high winds, and freezing conditions. A simple roof inspection will be able to tell you if any repairs or maintenance is needed. If your roof has any issues,  winter will exacerbate them, and make them even worse. It can take a loose shingle and turn in it into a huge leak that creates mold inside your attic and home. By doing regular maintenance on your roof you will increase the lifespan of your roof.

Clean the Gutters

winterize your roofOnce the trees are bare, and leaves and needles are covering the ground, this is also a good reminder to make sure all of your gutters are cleaned out properly. Preventative maintenance is the best defense when it comes to your home. When leaves and debris collect in your gutter system, eventually, it will create a clog in the gutters or downspouts. Rain water will overflow and backflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim, eaves and siding. The added weight of the wet leaves and water could also cause your gutters to pull loose or collapse.

To prevent these problems and unforeseen repair costs, make sure to clean your gutters, and then then do yourself a favor, give us a call, and have us install gutter screens.  Gutter screens or Gutter Guards are installed to prevent the collection of debris in the first place. It’s important to remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris from the surface of your roof as well as your gutters. Even small bits of debris will hold moisture and possibly rot or mold, which will break down your roofing material.

Top 10 Steps To Prepare Your Roof for Winter

Here are the top 10 things every homeowner should do to winterize their roof. Although you might think you can do some of these things yourself, be safe and do yourself a favor and call the professionals at Tugwell Roofing to make sure it gets done right, the first time!

  1. Inspect the entire roof. Look for signs of loose shingles, missing sections of roofing, stains, leaks, warped wood, mold or rot.
  2. Inspect and clean out your gutters. Check for early warning signs of trouble like, holes and cracks. Clean out any and all debris. Once you have cleaned out all the debris, it is a good idea to run your hose water through it to make sure that the gutters still carry water away from the foundation of the house.
  3. Cut off any tree limbs hanging over your home. Walk around your home and check for any limbs or branches that are hanging over or rubbing against your home. You also want to check for any dead trees. The branches and trees need to be cut back and down before winter hits to keep any winter damage from trees away from your home.
  4. attic leaksCheck Your Attic. Make sure you have proper ventilation in your attic. The fresh air will push out any stagnant, moist air. If there is not adequate ventilation in your roof you will get mildew, mold, rust, soggy decking, heavy icicles, and ice dams. Proper ventilation and insulation in your attic will help eliminate these issues.
  5. Check the caulking around your home. Caulking is not supposed to be cracked or wrinkled, this can cause leaks. If you see any caulking that is cracked or wrinkled it should be replaced.
  6. Check the flashings. Pay close attention to the area around the chimney, plumbing vents, and any other roof projections. Any flashing that is loose or damaged needs to be replaced.
  7. Clean and Inspect your Chimney. You should have your chimney inspected at least once a year. You should clean your chimney as often as required during the winter. If you use your fireplace everyday during the winter, it should be cleaned a few times.
  8. snow on roofInstall Snow Guards. If you live an area that gets heavy snow during the winter, like Shingletown, Weaverville or Mount Shasta, an important step in winterizing your home is to install snow guards. Snow guards will help prevent a roof avalanche from the heavy snow on your roof. A roof avalanche can cause damage to lower roofs, gutters, skylights, cars, pets and people. The snow guards allow the snow and ice to drop off in small amounts, or even melt completely before falling falling off.
  9. Watch for Pests. Pests like squirrels, mice, raccoons, and birds may see your home as a welcome reprieve from the cold weather. These animals can cause extensive and expensive damage to your home and roof. Check for any animal sign and any areas that look like the animals can get in and fix them.
  10. Go into your home and check the ceilings and walls. Check the ceilings and walls for any stains or leaks. The location of these stains and leaks should provide you with an idea of the area that needs to fixed.

Prevention is better and less expensive than a cure. Ensure all these steps are done before winter begins, and save yourself the cost and burden of a leaking or rotting roof in the middle of winter.
